Hopping up to Help
Topp’s Hops joins Longwood Brewery’s Telegraph Project
On December 31st 2024 the tiny coastal village of Telegraph Cove, BC suffered a devastating fire. Home of the world famous Whale Interpretive Centre and Telegraph Cove Resort & Campground, the area has long been a tourist haven on the north Island. You could shop local artisans, learn about whales, get out on the ocean to put that knowledge to work, then finish off at the pub with fine food and a pint - all in a day. Although local firefighters fought hard, key parts of the resort were lost - Old Saltery Pub & Killer Whale Cafe - and the entirety of the Whale Interpretive Centre. The feeling of loss was not just felt locally, calls of support have been made from all over the world, showing what a truly great impact the area has made. One of those calls, was from Nanaimo.
Longwood Brewery has close ties with the Cove, it created The Telegraph Project Pale Ale in 2021 to support the Whale Interpretive Centre’s fundraising efforts - with the brew being offered at the Old Saltery Pub and in surrounding communities. Once news broke of the fire though, the Nanaimo Brewery knew it was time to go wide. And the support has been incredible - where else than Canada would you be able to be a part of a comeback story by just grabbing a cold one? For every 4 pack purchased, $1 will go to the Whale Interpretive Centre and Telegraph Cove Resort & Campground rebuilding efforts.
We knew here at Topp’s Hops that we had to be a part of this and we were already in the mix, literally, our hops are in the Ale! It was our turn to to make a call. We let our friends at Longwood know - every pound of hops you use, we’ll add an additional $1 to the fundraising efforts. Now each one of those cans in your hand, gives back a little bit more. It’s a great feeling to know that the hops we grow here in the Fraser Valley, are helping the Brewery in Nanaimo, help the wonderful people of Telegraph Cove. In true Canadian spirit, we come together in times of need. Feel a sense of pride the next time you crack open a can of Telegraph Project Pale Ale, we know we will!
The fundraising efforts will run until September 1, 2025 and new locations to find Longwood Brewery Telegraph Pale Ale are being added daily - at the time of writing, 42 locations spanning from Port Hardy to Nelson, BC are on the list. To find out if you can shop it locally, follow Longwood Brewery’s socials or check the website for the current list of stores and pubs. No one close on the list? Let you favourite neighbourhood spot know, you’d like to see it on the shelf!
